Taking on the role as a full time student and part time tourist I found it tough to keep up with blogging while in Europe. However, now that I am finally back after four amazing months I am ready to get back into blogging. Hopefully I will be able to share some of my memories and trends I have picked up in Europe.
What better way to get back into blogging than with a little bit of spring cleaning. While fighting the jetlag I have slowly but surely been unpacking, organizing and cleaning out my closet. I am so excited to finally be able to wear all the clothes that didn't come with me to Europe and am so excited about the new fun trends for spring and summer.
Here are a few of my spring cleaning tips to keep in mind..
1. Be comfortable: The first night that I started my spring cleaning it was 80 degrees, the AC had not kicked in yet but my jetlag had. I was exhausted, sweating and miserable. I decided that I needed to call it a night. Spring cleaning isn't the most fun so make sure you are comfortable. Get your favorite candle going, an upbeat pandora station and something refreshing to drink. If you are grouchy, hot and uncomfortable you will most likely end up throwing out things you meant to keep or will just start to shove things wherever there's room which doesn't really end up helping in the long run.
2. Pack it away: I found that I kept trying to keep a lot of my winter clothes around "just incase of a cold day" but realistically keeping these pieces in my closet during the summer just makes things so crowded, especially those bulky sweaters. It's best to keep only what you will wear for the next four to five months and pack away the rest in boxes. I usually keep mine on high shelves or in boxes under my bed. This will make finding things to wear much easier because you wont have to go digging through everything to find the top you want to wear. It also makes it much easier to keep your closet organized all season long. I find that I am much more inclined to put things away when there are plenty of open hangers and space in my drawers to fold things nicely. Make sure to do the same with accessories and shoes.
3. Find YOUR system: There are so many ways you can organize your closet. By color, by sleeve or pant length, by occasion. There really is no right or wrong way it is really all about what system works best for you. Everyone's closet is different too so you have to find a system that works best for you. You can also even combine all three methods which is what I try to do. I will say, I do always try to think about which pieces I wear the most and keep those in an easy spot to reach so I will be more willing to put them away after a long day.
4. Say Goodbye: As much as I hate this part we all have to do it. I always hate giving away or throwing out my fave pair of jeans that have so many memories but just aren't doin it for me anymore. Sadly, there always comes a time. Be sure to do this stage of the cleaning first, you will be the most patient at this time and will do a much better job. When trying to decide whether to keep or give away it's important to not be lazy and try things on because sure enough that will give you your answer. Also don't try and tackle every season at once. I usually go through my closet once in the spring and once in the fall because it's just too overwhelming to do it all at once. Also, styles change so frequently that you never know what will be out so it's best to wait until fall to tackle those sweaters.
5. Invest: I think it's so worth it to invest in some good organizational systems to help you keep things looking neat. My favorite thing in my closet are my slim black velvet hangers. They really do save a lot of room and look much nicer than the white plastic ones. I love that they all match and hang at the same length as well. I also love my scarf hanger as a way to store my winter scarves. It's a simple hook shaped hanger that can literally hold about 50 scarves which is perfect for a scarf addict like me. The perfect time to buy new hangers or a new organizational system is when you are ready to clean out all the old. It will force you to actually use all those hangers you bought rather than let them sit around and be forgotten.
